Two Steven Gerrard penalties and a Luis Suarez strike downed rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford as Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool did everything to strengthen their title credentials.

Liverpool took the lead after 34 minutes, with Rafael handling in the area before Steven Gerrard stepped up with a perfect spot-kick, sending David De Gea the wrong way.

The Brazilian defender was lucky to stay on the pitch having already been booked, but Mark Clattenburg kept his cards in his pocket.

Wayne Rooney tested Simon Mignolet just before half-time, but his fizzing effort was parried away.

Phil Jones then upended Joe Allen in the area just after the break, with Gerrard stepping up to slot home with inch-perfect precision again.
